1 JUNE 2014  Sydney Airport has implemented licence plate recognition (LPR) to make the short fare system faster and fairer for all taxi drivers.

The new system enables drivers to exit the taxi ranks without having to notify the kerbside officer of their taxi number, and it allows kerbside staff to focus on improving taxi flow and drivers to focus on serving their customers.

Under the system, drivers must approach the cameras at a speed below 5km/h and maintain a three metre gap between their vehicle and the vehicle in front.

Reflective licence plates have a higher capture rate than non-reflective licence plates.  If you do not have a reflective licence plate there is a risk that they will not be able to take advantage of the short fare system.  Dirty or damaged licence plates may not be ready the cameras either.

Any taxi not captured within the LPR system will not be permitted access to the taxi ranks as a short fare.
