The NSW Taxi Council today welcomed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) determination to authorise the ‘ihail’ universal taxi booking app.
CEO of the NSW Taxi Council, Mr Roy Wakelin-King, said this was an important decision that helped increase consumer choice in a highly competitive market.
“ihail is an important development in the NSW Taxi Industry’s response to the changing point to point transport sector, particularly in light of the NSW Government’s recent reforms in this area,” Mr Wakelin-King said.
“ihail will provide greater choice and flexibility for customers when catching a taxi and it will promote competition and service innovation.”
Mr Wakelin-King also emphasised the importance of good service being part of the overall customer experience with taxis.
“Just having an app does not in itself guarantee success. A booking app is just a means to an end and whilst ihail’s functionality will enhance the passenger’s experience with taxis, it must be backed up with good customer service.

“Too many point to point transport booking apps have come and gone because they have not been able to deliver and therefore it is vital that those taxi organisations that choose the ihail booking service ensure they put their best foot forward every time.”
Mr Wakelin-King also acknowledged the importance of the ACCC process in this matter.
“The NSW Taxi Industry is a strong believer in compliance with the law and we are pleased that, although the process was lengthy, the appropriate rigour was applied to this determination,” he said.
“Moving forward with confidence that your product or service is compliant in all respects is a key part of doing business. We will be working with all relevant parties to ensure that the conditions placed on the authorisation of ihail by the ACCC are met.”
