NSW Taxi Council Welcomes Court Ruling on Illegal Ridesharing in Victoria

04 December 2015 | NSW Taxi Council

The NSW Taxi Council welcomes the decision by the Victorian Magistrates Court today that Uber ridesharing drivers are ignoring the law and continuing to operate illegally.

Uber driver found guilty of driving hire car without licence or registration

It is not sustainable, equitable or safe to allow a foreign multinational to pay the fines of drivers caught operating illegally, while regulated taxi services are held accountable under the law.

Rideshare drivers are not subject to ongoing government-backed criminal record checks or ongoing vehicle safety checks. There are also serious questions around the adequacy of insurance for illegal ridesharing services.

The court ruling in Victoria is an important statement that the rule of law must apply, and the NSW Taxi Council again calls on the State Government do everything it can to uphold the law and ensure public safety for the people of NSW.
