General information

The NSW Taxi Industry is part of the overall public transport system for the State.  As a consequence, there are important checks and balances that are put in place to ensure that the travelling public are provided with safe and reliable services.

The NSW Taxi Industry supports these requirements and actively participates in the regulatory and compliance process.  It is only through effective systems and constant vigilance by both the Government and the industry that safety and reliability for the public can be maintained.

Taxi Inspections

Each taxi in the Sydney Metropolitan area is inspected every four months, while every vehicle in regional areas is inspected every 6 months – meaning there are almost 20,000 accredited safety inspections at Authorised Taxi Inspection Stations (ATIS) throughout NSW every year.

In addition, the NSW Roads and Maritime Services, the NSW Police, the Department of Immigration and other key government agencies carry out random inspections of taxis through on-road compliance checks.
