Transport for NSW reverts the "Bus Only Lane" back to a "Bus Lane" on the Cahill Expressway as a part of the Northern Toll Plaza Removal Project.
Following concerns raised by our members, the NSW Taxi Council is pleased to have been working with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) towards having the decision on the Bus Lane on the Sydney Harbour Bridge reverted. We are also grateful for the collaboration with Motorcycle Council of NSW in raising these concerns.
Transport for NSW has agreed to revert the "Bus Only Lane" back to a "Bus Lane" on the Cahill Expressway as part of the Northern Toll Plaza removal project. The changes with new signage and line-making are expected to be implemented from Tuesday 6 July 2021, weather permitting. Please see the announcement from TfNSW below-
Announcement from TfNSW
Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has undertaken an audit and review of the new layout based on community concerns. The main findings of the audit were as follows:
Potential for bus drivers who are outside their vehicles in the bus layover to be struck by passing vehicles in the adjacent lane
Potential for rear-end crashes between motorcycles, Taxis, hire cars and any other Point to Point vehicles merging out of the bus lane on approach to the bus only lane, and buses approaching from behind.
Considering the audit findings and in the interest of road safety, TfNSW has decided to revert the “Bus Only Lane” back to a “Bus Lane”.
Civil works, signposting and an educational communications strategy will be undertaken in the coming weeks.
The changes are expected to be implement with new signage and line-marking on Tuesday 6 July 2021, weather permitting.
